Wired magazine’s online edition published on Thursday said that many enterprises are satisfied with the product upgrading 10%, but CEO Larry page of Google (Larry Page), this is not the case. PEC believes that, if a product just promoted 10%, then you just followed. You may not fail, but will not achieve greater success. Therefore, Pec hope that Google employees can develop up to 10 times better than competitors times by product and service.
Google CEO Larry page
10 times improvement needs to rethink the entire product, taking into account the technological frontiers of possibility, and this process will bring a lot of fun. Google by virtue of such a concept has been a big success, changing people’s lives and earn a huge profit. Wired has an interview with the magazine pages in recent years, Pec talked about his early work for Google and Google x project.
Following is the interview full text:
Question: Google employees are encouraged to take up the challenge and adventure, and famous for such practices. What is the importance of doing?
Page: I worry that our company’s philosophy may be a serious error. If you read the media coverage of our company or the entire technology industry, always on the competition. These news reports and sports competitions are similar. However, it is difficult to find due to competition and only the birth of excellent products. If you make every effort to only to beat other companies doing the same work, so how such work is exciting? That’s why many companies are gradually fading. They tend to do things and make minor improvements. The familiar things, avoiding failure is human nature, but incremental improvements will become meaningful. Particularly in the technology sector, you already know the non-incremental changes can occur.
Therefore, a large part of my work is to encourage employees to focus on non-incremental thing. Gmail, for example. When we released Gmail, we were a search company. Launch email products for us, is a jump, especially considering that Gmail provides 100 times times more space than other services. If we just focus on incremental changes, so it is unlikely to do so.
Q: but you also need to be making incremental improvements to existing products, isn’t it?
Pec: of course. But periodically, every few years, you must be doing something you feel the significance of the new work. For these products, you will gradually have some ideas. I can list 10 main problems in e-mail service. I tried to save a list like this in my mind.
Q: you now have a folder named Google x-sector, focus on high-tech projects, such as unmanned vehicles. Why did you decide to set up a complete sector, engaged in this work?
Pec: throughout your business, we need a breakthrough, non-incremental work. But now the Google x relatively independent of the work.
You know, we are always facing controversy: we have capital and talent, so why not do more things? You might say, Apple had only a few little things, but it has been very good for them. But I am not satisfied with this. I feel that there are many opportunities in the world, we can use technology to help people live better. At Google, we may focus on only one of 0.1%, and all technology companies combined are aimed only at the 1%. This means 99% a blank area. Investors always worry, “you guys are spending too much money on crazy things.” But now is to make them feel excited about products, including YouTube, Chrome and Android. If you don’t do some crazy things, you might be doing wrong.
Q: the saying goes, “The outstanding usually bear the brunt of attack.”. Look at the experience of Xerox PARC, great innovation does not seem to bring help to the company itself.
Pec: Xerox PARC is a large research organization, who invented many modern computing tools. But they do not focus on commercialization. In fact, you need to pay equal attention to both. I respect a company Tesla, for example. They not only develop innovative cars, while also 99% energy into how to promote to users on this car. I had wanted to be an inventor during the growth process. But then I learned that some of the greatest inventors, such as nikela·tesila (Nicola Tesla) there had been a tragic experience. Excellent talent may not play an influence, because they do not have to translate invention into a commercial product.
Q: why we don’t see more people have this ambition?
Pec: make breakthrough ideas is not easy, schools did not teach people how to find these difficult projects. What should I go to school, in order to know which technology should I project? You may need to accept a broad science and technology education, and little known organizations and enterprises. No degree is provided for that purpose. Our education system to train personnel in a professional manner, rather than instruct them on how to select an item can have a broad impact.
Q: I know you and Sergey Brin (Sergey Brin) has been in a very long time to think about these challenges. In an interview in 2002: I told you, you actually write the parameters of Google goggles.
Pec: then why don’t we do it? We must have enough time. It’s like driverless cars. When I was in school at Stanford University, I wanted to do, and that was 14 years ago. Only change is that we now have the resources to do.
Q: in addition to the innovation projects of Google x, Google also spent time on what you?
Pec: a large part of my energies to ensure the core products can provide a good user experience. Whether it is Chrome, search engine, also is Gmail, this is Google’s product, require a consistent look and feel. Provide 50 types of information sharing is not a good user experience, it needs to consolidate.
Question: Google is becoming a powerful company, may also be a timid companies, does this mean that the implementation of significant changes more difficult?
Pec: difficulty increases, but has also brought advantages. There are 1 billion people using our product.
Q: when you set out your intentions, you do well enough? To book search, for example. For you, provide a way to search for all books in the world will not have any problems but caused resentment in the industry, as well as prolonged litigation.
Pec: there is no doubt that this was not pleasant. But please tell me which companies only to fail because of the litigation. I have not seen examples of this. Company’s failure is due to an error did, or eyes narrow, rather than action or competition.
Q: Steve Jobs (Steve Jobs) has attached great importance to competition, and claimed that to Android “thermonuclear war.”
Pec: so, how do they do?
Q: do you believe that Android’s huge lead in market share is crucial?
佩奇: Android was very successful and we are pleased about this.
Q: when you are the 2005 acquisition of Andi·Lubin (Andy Rubin) company, do you wish to have so much success?
Pec: we have the ability to think about the future possibilities, and bound to not be the status quo. When you buy Android, obviously the mobile operating system of very poor quality. You can’t write software for these systems. You can compare now and then. Therefore I do not believe that our bets in Android is very large. You need to have the confidence to make long-term investments, and believe that the future will be better and better.
Q: there is one area, people think of Google as the market competition to drive, that is social networking. In the past 2 years, you actively explore this is Facebook-dominated market. If this is the case?
Page: I do not look at it this way. How users share information, how to express identity, there is a real problem in those areas. Facebook is a powerful company in this area, but their product is not doing well. If we want to be successful, then other companies will have to fail? This is not the case. We can be different. If you think that, in these areas, the market only one company, so was arbitrary. While the search service when we were introduced, everyone said “you will fail, because the market is there are 5 search companies”. We were of the view that “we are a search company, but our approach is different”. This is the way I look at these areas.
Q: Google+ what are you?
Pec: I was pleased with the progress of the Google+. We have developed some really great things, there are many competitors to imitate. So I think we did a good job.
Q: when compared with Apple, Android is always claiming to be a more open platform. Removed when Apple iOS 6 on Google maps, when you switch to autonomous mapping applications, this was particularly evident. Apple decision aroused strong dissatisfaction user, does this prove that you adhere to the open right?
Pec: I don’t want to comment on the partnership. We have been engaged in the development of Google maps for a long time. We are pleased to see it recognized our work and investment. We now got more praise.
You may have the best maps of the world, but if you go to, you will not be able to play a role. Our philosophy is to let the product covers more users as much as possible. It is unfortunate, in the current environment, it’s not easy. The Internet used to be useful, we can for all, rapid release a quality product. Now, however, there has been regression, because there are many platforms exist. Many companies try to staking, I think it will affect the pace of innovation.
Question: Google challenges in patenting, and you, through the acquisition of Motorola’s patents to solve this problem.
Pec: we also buy Motorola mobile. (Viking)
